9/14/10 Distinguished Alumni Award Nominations The Distinguished Alumni Award gives recognition to distinguished alumni of the Ateneo School of Law engaged in the active private practice of law and whose exemplary conduct in the administration and pursuit of justice, as well as contribution to the development of the law and jurisprudence have inspired others to value and respect the law as an Instrument of truth, peace, order and justice. Nominations are open to any member in good standing engaged in the active practice of law. All nominees must have completed a program of study at the Ateneo Law School no less than ten (10) years prior to the date of the awarding. The nominations will be reviewed by the Screening Committee who will endorse a list of 5 nominees for final selection by the Board of Judges. Nomination rules and nomination forms are available at the ALAAI Secretariat in APS Rockwell 20 Rockwell Drive Rockwell Center, Makati or may be requested through tel. no. 899 7691 loc 2310 (1pm-8pm) or through email ateneolawalumni@yahoo.com. All nomination forms must be signed by both the nominator and the nominee and shall be accompanied by a biodata of the nominee containing his or her signature. Nominations for the Ateneo De Manlla Law Alumni| Association Inc. (ALAAI) Distinguished Alumni Award should be submitted not later than 20 September 2010. The award will be presented during the Annual Homecoming on 1 October 2010 at the Makatl Shangri La Hotel.

A Letter From Sen. Drilon to Atty. Marcelo...

Dear Atty. Marcelo,

We respond to your letter dated October 6, 2010.

We fully understand the importance of providing adequate funds for the Judiciary and the need to comply with the const itut ionally mandated financial guarantees and fiscal autonomy to the Judiciary.
As a background, a Special Allowance for the Judiciary was authorized pursuant to the Republic Act No. 9227 entitled "An Act Granting Additional Compensation in the Form of Special Allowances for Justices,Judges and All Other Position in the Judiciary with the Equivalent Rank of Justices of the Court of Appeals and Judges of the Regional Trial Court, and for Other Purposes". The provisions of this law, which was enacted in November 11, 2003 is summarized, as follows :

a) A Special Allowance shall be granted t o members of the Judiciary
equivalent to one hundred percent (100%) of their basic monthly
salary specified for their respective salary grades under Republic Act
No. 67S8. This Special Allowance will be spread over four years until the 100%of their basicsalary is reached.

b) All special allowancesgranted under R.A. No. 9227, and any additional allowances granted to other personnel of the Judiciary is considered an advance implementat ion of any salary increases which may be provided by law
